DO YOU KNOW WHAT OSTEOPOROSIS IS?
Osteoporosis
is a systematical illness of bone metabolism. Generaly, progressive
illness of skeleeton makes smaller the bone strenght (bones quality
and bone mass). Most frequently it appears in involuntive form
in so called postmenopause, presenile or senile osteoporosis,
but recently it appears in secondary form, as a result of illnesses
of other organ systems or it appears by irritation, that is to
say by using certian medicines (for example corticosteroid drugs).
WHO ATTACKS IT?
Every second
woman and every fifth man over fifty has a serious increased risk
to get osteoporosis.
WHICH ARE MOST FREQUENT FACTORS OF
RISK?
- age
the
white race
- female
- premature menopause (under forty)
- hypogonadism
- reduced corporal mass
- heredity
- hyperthyroidism
- longer immobilization
- physical inactivity
- reduced calcium and vitamin D in meals
- nourishment too rich in fats and proteins
- smoking
- drinking coffee and alcoholic drinks
in greater quantity
WHICH ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF OSTEOPOROSIS?
The most unwanted consequence
of osteoporosis is the weak and easy breakable bone. The most
frequent fractures appear on the backbone vertebrae (back and
flank vertebrae), at the upper part of the thighbone and the lower
part of forearm bone. Often these fractures appear on the smallest
mechanical force, and even without any discomfort. That is the
reason why this illness is called "the silent thief, which
steals your bones".
HOW TO FIND THIS ILLNESS?
The diagnosis is made on
the details of anamnesis of the patients, by acquanting the patient
with the exsisting risk factors, physical examination, making
x-ray of the chest and flank part of the backbone and measuring
the density of the bone mass by special apparatus. According to
the advice of the WHO UN, the most precise method for establishing
bone density of the skeleton is the examination by osteorodensity-metre
with double x-ray photon absortionmetre (DEXA). It is a painless,
fast method of giving diagnosis which is not harmful for the organism,
and gives precise data about the quality and the status of the
skeleton.
CABINET FOR OSTEOPOROSIS IN BANJA KANJIA
The
Cabinet for Osteoporosis has begun to work in the Specialized
Hospital for Rehabilitation "Banja-Kanjia" from
1st October, 2006. It is equipped by Hologic osteodensymetre,
on which works a team of specialists. Beside establishing the
bone density mass, the patients get an all-embracing advice with
the aim of prevention of this illness, treatment, as well as their
following (laboratory establishment of bone markers).
Examination price: 48 €.
